Types of Long Distance Phone Cards |
Before purchasing decide which type of phone card is best for your calling habits and needs.
- prepaid (a dollar value pin via the internet)
- postpaid (you are billed monthly either by credit card or direct billing)
- toll-free access (call a toll-free number nationwide)
- local access (available only to specific locations, usually area codes)
- no connect or flat rate (there are no per call connection fees)
- global (you may call from other countries, including the U.S.A.)
- cellular (prepaid cellular time, specific for your own cellular provider)
Prepaid services are available as toll-free access, with some meant specifically for local access. They also come in both flat rate (no connection fees) and connect fee. Normally, connect fee services give lower rates per minute as well as more total available minutes, which are geared more toward long talkers.
Normally, you get the best rates and more minutes using prepaid. Not all prepaids are equal. Never make a purchase based on rate alone. Check for connection fees and how often a maintenance fee is charged (if it is).
Postpaid services come in all types, with most having no connect fees, and many having global access from most major countries.
